State metals theft laws are rarely one-size-fits-all and commonly contain particular exemptions in recognition of the fact that thousands of legitimate transactions occur daily with little risk of involving stolen material. Exemptions vary from state to state and can apply to materials, transaction types, and/or certain sellers and purchasers of scrap metal. To learn more about a state law exemption, just select the states you'd like to review from the list below. This information can also be included in a Custom Report by selecting Exemptions from the Materials and Entities category.
Some terms used in this report may be defined in the Materials Covered, Types of Recyclers, or Types of Sellers provisions. If you are uncertain of the meaning of a term you can check these provisions with a Custom Report, view the statute using the Reference Web Links provision, or contact ReMA for more information.
